description

Way of the Cross of Jesus
Departure of the three magicians

The church complex was part of a no longer existing monastery, which was consecrated to St. Ioannis Lampadistis, a local saint. The complex comprises three churches (Agios Ioannis Lampadistis, Agios Iraklidios and a Latin chapel) and a narthex , which are united under a common shingle roof. It is one of the barn roof churches in the Troodos Mountains and is near the village of Kalopanagiotis . The frescoes date from the 13th to 16th centuries.

The main church of St. Ioannis Lampadistis was rebuilt at the beginning of the 18th century, so that no old frescoes have been preserved.

The "Church of St. Heraklidios" is dedicated to Herakleidios , the first bishop of Tamassos , who is said to have been consecrated by the apostles Paul and Barnabas in 45 AD. In a painting from the 14th century, the Roman soldiers leading Jesus to the crucifixion are depicted as western knights.

The hymn to Mary Akathistos was painted around 1500 in the "Latin Chapel" . When the three magicians set out from the east, an angel on a white horse points out the star. It is a masterpiece of post-Byzantine, Italianizing three-dimensional painting. With the two daring figures with their Phrygian caps walking away in opposite directions, a perfect balance is achieved.
