Timios Stavros tou Agiasmati

Timios Stavros tou Agiasmati ( Greek Τιμίος Σταυρος του Αγιασμάτι ) is a church building of the Cypriot Orthodox Church in Cyprus . The church was in 1985 by the UNESCO as part of the World Heritage Site Painted Churches in the area of Troodos in the World Heritage UNESCO added.

description

The church is one of the barn roof churches in the Troodos Mountains and is about four kilometers from Platanistasa . It is consecrated to the Holy Cross . As with the Panagia tis Podithou church in Galata, the wooden roof of the Holy Cross Church rests on a wall surrounding the church, creating a covered walkway . The nickname Agiasmati probably reminds us that refugees from a place of the same name in Asia Minor fled here after the conquest of Constantinople in 1453.

The paintings date from the end of the 15th century. Among them are two scenes of the conversion of the emperor Constantine to Christianity and ten miniatures of the finding of the true cross of Christ by Constantine's mother Helena . The pictures reminded the refugees of a happier time.

In the “Capture of Jesus” Judas approaches from the left. Law cuts Peter the Malchus from an ear. The most remarkable detail is the half-naked young man on the right with a halo who looks at the viewer with concern and who is missing his right forearm. According to the Stylianous, it is Mark who made himself an eyewitness in his Gospel ( Mk 14.50–52  EU ): Everyone left Jesus and fled. “But a young man who was only clothed in a linen cloth wanted to go after him. Then they grabbed him; but he dropped the cloth and ran away naked. ”In the“ Mocking of Jesus ”some of the mockers wear musical instruments.
