description

The Marienkirche is one of the four frescoed churches in Galata and the surrounding area. It belongs to the barn roof churches in the Troodos Mountains and is dedicated to Mary, the mother of Jesus , as a holy saint . Almost 100 m to the east is the smaller church Panagia Theotokos or Archangelos Michail, which is included in the same part of the world heritage site.

According to the inscription, the building was built in 1502 at the request and expense of the French nobleman Demetrios de Coron and his wife Helena. The church belonged to a monastery that has now disappeared. It is surrounded by a wall; The gable roof rests on this, so that a covered walkway is created between the church and the wall.

The paintings are from the time it was built and show the influence of the Western Renaissance .
