description

The church is one of the barn roof churches in the Troodos Mountains . It is located about five kilometers outside the village of Kakopetria on a stream and is dedicated to St. Nicholas of Myra . Construction began in the early 11th century and was later expanded and given the barn roof. The frescoes date from six centuries.

The fine features of larger-than-life Nicholas, the church patron, from the 12th century reveal an artist who is experienced in icon and fresco painting. Next to his shoulders, Jesus, painted smaller, hand him a Bible and Mary an omophorion . At the bottom left is a monk with an inscription above him. Saint Theodore and Saint George from the 14th century, also larger than life, wear colorful uniforms. In a “Birth of Jesus” from the 14th century, the mother is shown as a Galactotrophousa ; she extends her left breast to the child. Goats climb in the mountains with sprinkles of white in their fur. A young man on the left plays the flute.
