Barn roof church is a type of some church buildings of the Cypriot Orthodox Church in the Troodos Mountains of Cyprus . Nine of the barn roof churches in 1985 by the UNESCO under the name Painted Churches in the Troodos area as a World Heritage site in the UNESCO World Heritage added, another followed the 2,001th

description

The external appearance of these churches is reminiscent of barns with the deeply drawn-down shingle roofs that protect against the rainy climate , mostly made of wood shingles, without a bell tower, which led to the designation of this type of building as a barn roof church . Some churches had these roofs from the start, such as the Panagia tis Asinou near Nikitari, others received them afterwards, such as the church Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis near Kakopetria. About half of the 61 churches described by Andreas and Judith A. Stylianou in their fundamental work on painted churches in Cyprus are of the barn roof type.

From the outside, these churches appear simple and rustic. The splendidly glowing Byzantine frescoes contrast with this inside . They give an overview of the Byzantine and post-Byzantine painting art in Cyprus.
