description

The Mother of God or Archangel Church is one of four frescoed churches in Galata and the surrounding area. It belongs to the barn roof churches in the Troodos Mountains and is consecrated to Mary, the mother of Jesus , as the Mother of God and the Archangel Michael . It is located almost 100 m east of the larger church Panagia Eleousa tis Podithou , which is included in the same sub-area of the World Heritage Site .

The donors have had themselves depicted in a Deësis above the north entrance . Jesus is enthroned, his mother and John the Baptist at his sides. The inscription reads: “This venerable Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built with a foundation by Mr. Stephanos Zacharias and his wife Luisa. Pray for them Amen. And it was painted at the expense of Polos Zacharias and his wife Madelena and their children. Pray for them in the name of the Lord. The painting was completed by Symeon Axentis on January 17, 1514. ”Polos, dressed in black, probably a son of Stephanos, holds a model of a church in his hand. His son kneels in front of him. On the other side of the family crest, the female family members, Madelena and three daughters, kneel. Madelena holds a rosary, perhaps in memory of her Roman Catholic origins. The oldest daughter on the far right is carrying a book written in Greek. "The donor portraits with their finely drawn clothing testify that Axentis was a master who could also work from nature - although Byzantine painting basically followed strict, centuries-old rules that left little room for innovation." The Christmas picture shows the bald shepherd dressed in a thick sheepskin in front of Josef.
