Kakopetria is a popular place in Troodos

Kakopetria ( Greek Κακοπετριά = "bad stones") is a village in Cyprus on the northern slopes of Troodos on the B9 , 40 km north of Limassol and 55 km southwest of the capital Nicosia at an altitude of 667 meters. It is the highest settlement in the Solea Valley and has 1198 inhabitants. Numerous Cypriots have a second home here or spend their summer retreat here because of the cooler temperatures. This is due to the altitude and the dense forest that surrounds the village. Two small brooks ("Kargotis", "Garillis"), which unite in the place and together form the "Klarios", ensure pleasant moisture.

description

Kakopetria lies along the valley of the two streams, with the "new" Kakopetria with its large, modern houses in the eastern part of the valley. The "old", listed Kakopetria lies to the west between the two streams. The streets are narrow and steep, the houses have stone foundations and mud-plastered walls. They mostly come from the 18th / 19th centuries. Century and have been renovated with government support. The roofs of the houses are (mostly) covered with round roof tiles and almost all houses have an upper floor and a (partly artfully carved) wooden balcony.

history

There was already a settlement here in the 6th – 7th centuries. Century, as shown by excavations in 1938. Mentioned by medieval historians, the place has been documented since the rule of the Franks.

The excavations brought numerous finds, including the goddess Athena . These figures and statues are mostly made of terracotta or limestone , but arrow and spearheads made of bronze and iron were also to be found. These finds indicate the early settlement of Cyprus and are exhibited in the Archaeological Museum in Nicosia.

tourism

Kakopetria is popular because of its healthy and cool climate, the beautiful nature in a quiet location, the rich vegetation (poplars, apple and walnut trees), its cool streams and its original appearance. The proximity to the cities of Nicosia and Limassol favors tourist activities. On the one hand, the place is used as a summer retreat and as a second home for wealthy city dwellers, on the other hand, foreign tourists also visit this place.

Hotels , numerous taverns and kafenia (coffee houses) make Kakopetria one of the most popular excursion destinations in Cyprus. Also worth seeing is the small, old barn roof village church "Panagia Theotókos" (= "the woman giving birth") from 1520 with beautiful paintings.

The barn roof church " Agiou Nikólaou tis Stégis " (= "Saint Nicholas on / from the roof") - one of the ten barn roof churches belonging to the UNESCO World Heritage Site , which is located approx. 2 km southwest of the village, is one of the special sights in the vicinity north of Kakopetria adjacent place Galata with the former monastery complex " Panagia tis Podithou " and the church " Panagia Theotókos " - also called "Archangelos" (= "Archangel").
