Attractions

One of the main attractions in Agios Nikolaos is the Archaeological Museum, which was built in 1970 to house the finds from Eastern Crete that were previously housed in Heraklion . The museum is closed until at least 2018. There is also a folklore museum at the tourist information building, which tells about the life of the Greeks in history. A few kilometers north of the city is the Spinalonga peninsula, connected to the mainland by a dam, and the island fortress of the same name . Until the middle of the 20th century, the island was a leprosy station and the last leper colony in Europe. The Byzantine church of Agios Nikolaos, which gives the place its name, stands in the north of Agios Nikolaos on a promontory. The offshore island of Agii Pandes serves as a reserve for the Cretan wild goat and is not accessible.
