Agnes Stevenson

Agnes Stevenson , born Agnes Bradley Lawson (christened the 30th November 1873 in Durham , † 20th August 1935 in Poznan , Poland ) was one for England playing British chess player .

Agnes Bradley Lawson was baptized in Durham on November 30, 1873 . On December 26, 1912, she married Rufus Henry Streatfeild Stevenson, a chess official, whose surname she thereby adopted.

She won the British Women's Chess Championship in 1920, 1925, 1926 and 1930. As a strong player, she was allowed to take part in several world chess championships for women , all of which were won by Vera Menchik .

At the women's chess world championship in 1927 , she finished 9th to 11th among twelve participants. In 1930 she was fifth and in 1931 third with five players each. She was set for the 1935 World Chess Championship for women , but suffered a fatal accident on arrival. During a stopover from Berlin to Warsaw, she had to leave the plane in Poznan and was hit in the head by the propeller when she returned to the plane that had already started.

Her widower married Vera Menchik in 1937 .
