Agnes von Hanau (Klarenthal)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Agnes von Hanau († November 22, 1446 ) was a daughter of Ulrich V von Hanau (* approx. 1370; † 1419) and his wife Elisabeth von Ziegenhain (* approx. 1375; † December 1, 1431 ), daughter of Count Gottfried VIII. From Ziegenhain .

Agnes entered the Klarenthal monastery together with her sister Adelheid in 1412 . On the occasion of this act, the sisters renounced all claims to the rule of Hanau . In return, they received the equipment required to enter the monastery . This was a common practice in noble families during the Middle Ages to care for younger daughters.

Agnes probably became abbess of the Klarenthal monastery in 1422 - this is documented for the first time in 1424. The monastery flourished during her term of office. The monastery church was artistically designed and the cloister was built. Czysz attests to her "skillful and commercial management of the monastery property".

Agnes died on November 22nd, 1446 and was buried in the monastery church of Klarenthal.
