from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ernst von Braunschweig-Göttingen (* around 1305; † April 24, 1367 ) from the family of the Welfen was Duke of Braunschweig-Lüneburg and from 1344 prince in the Principality of Göttingen .

Life

Ernst was a son of Rixa von Werle and Duke Albrecht des Feisten , who ruled over the Principality of Göttingen from 1286 and over the Brunswick territory from 1292 . After his death, Ernst's older brother Otto der Milde took over the general government. After he died childless in 1344, his brothers Magnus I of Braunschweig and Ernst divided the land. The Göttingen territory, which was now separated from Braunschweig for a long time, got serious.

The Principality of Göttingen, also called Oberwald, was the poorest of the Guelph principalities. At that time it consisted of the former Northeim possessions , the cities of Göttingen , Uslar , Dransfeld , Münden , Gieselwerder and half of Moringen . Despite the division of the estate, the city of Braunschweig remained in the possession of the entire family.

In 1339 Ernst married Elisabeth, a daughter of Landgrave Heinrich II ("the Iron") of Hesse . The first of six known children from this marriage was Otto , who would later be called "the Quade". Another well-known son was appointed clergyman.

Around 1364 Ernst handed over some of the government affairs to his son Otto. After Ernst's death in 1367, Otto was to take over in full.

In contrast to that of his son, not much is known about Ernst's reign, but it is assumed that he, like his predecessor, fought together with the cities against the noble knights who owned castles in the Göttingen area. In the final years of his reign he lived in peace with most of his neighbors and was allied with many. Only with the Hochstift Hildesheim was he at war in 1364 together with his allies, Mainz, Hesse, Waldeck and Hohnstein.
