Agonopterix umbellana (syn. Agonopterix ulicetella ) is a butterfly from the subfamily of the flat-bodied moths (Depressariinae) within the family of grass miners (Elachistidae).
features
The moths reach a wingspan of 19 to 24 millimeters. The forewings have a light ocher basic color and a dark brown line pattern. The outer edge of the wing is lined with two dark brown lines. A row of dark brown spots runs within this. In the rest position, the wings are folded flat and overlapping.
distribution
The species is widespread in Europe. The species is also represented in the British Isles. For biological pest control of the invasive gorse species Ulex europaeus , Agonopterix umbellana was introduced in Hawaii in 1988 and New Zealand in 1990 .
Way of life
Agonopterix umbellana forms a generation a year that flies from August to May. The species overwinters as an imago. The caterpillars develop from late May to early August stems of gorse ( Ulex ) and broom ( Genista ). The caterpillars often stay within a tubular web. The forage plants of the butterfly species include Genista anglica , Genista pilosa , Ulex europaeus , Ulex gallii and Ulex minor .
Taxonomy
The original scientific name of the butterfly species is Pyralis umbellana Fabricius , 1794. In the literature, the following synonyms and spellings are used:
- Agonopterix lennigiella ( Fox , 1880)
- Agonopterix prostratella ( Constant , 1884)
- Agonopterix ulicetella ( Stainton , 1849)
