Agostino Cardamone (* 1. December 1965 in Montoro Inferiore ) is a former Italian boxer in the middleweight division . He was Italian champion, two-time European champion at the EBU and World Cup challenger at the WBC .

Career

Agostino Cardamone boxed with the pros from 1989 and won each of his 15 fights until 1992. In February 1992 he defeated Silvio Branco in the fight for the Italian championship and defended the title that same year against Stefano Pompilio and Luigi De Cicilia.

On June 23, 1993 he defeated Francesco Dell'Aquila by knockout and was thereby European middleweight champion. Dell'Aquila had a record of 35-2 at this point and had boxed against James Toney for the World Cup in 1991 . In December 1993 Cardamone defended the European Championship belt on points against the Frenchman Frédéric Seillier (34-4), who later had two World Cup chances against Frankie Liles and Steve Collins . In 1994 he defended the European Championship against the French Gino Lelong, as well as against the British Neville Brown and Shaun Cummins. Brown also became Steve Collins' 1996 World Cup challenger.

After these successes Cardamone got a world championship chance on March 17, 1995 and boxed in Worcester , Massachusetts , against Julian Jackson (50-3) for the WBC middleweight title. After he had clearly dominated the duel by then and brought Jackson to the edge of precipitation in the first round, he was severely knocked to the ground in the second round, whereupon referee Marty Denkin broke off the fight.

In June 1996 Cardamone lost in the renewed fight for the European Middleweight Championship against the Russian Alexander Saizew, but was able to defeat this in the rematch on April 24, 1998 and thus become European champion again. In December 1998 he beat Silvio Branco again in the fight for the WBU title and also won the direct rematch in March 1999. He played his last fight in June 1999 against the Dutchman Raymond Joval.
