Agrarium refers to an exhibition in the " open-air museum on the Kiekeberg ", which was opened in May 2012 in the Lower Saxon community of Rosengarten . The themes of agriculture and the food industry through the ages are exhibited in this show magazine on three floors . Visitors learn the background to food production and the way food takes from the field to the consumer, for example with vegetables and cereals. It is unusual for an open-air museum that this permanent exhibition does not stay in the past, but also looks into the present and the future.

A large part of the museum's agricultural engineering collection is integrated in the Agrarium and was thus made accessible to the public and experts. Tractors , harvesting machines and machines from the food industry are presented on heavy-duty shelves . At the same time, the Agrarium is designed as an interactive exhibition. Display boards, multimedia elements and interactive stations, so-called hands-on stations, place the exhibits in a larger context.

Agricultural technology and a cow hanging from the ceiling in the agrarium

For the first time in Germany, the exhibition combines the development of agriculture and nutrition. The large population growth in the 19th century made more food and thus efficient agriculture necessary. Three factors were decisive for this development: driving forces, agricultural technology and the food industry.

Driving forces

The ground floor is dedicated to the subject of driving forces. Here it is shown that industrial production in large quantities was only possible through the efficient use of driving forces. Steam power is the starting point for development. Tractors, plows, pumps, butter churns and more are operated with steam power. In the interior in particular, electricity was of crucial importance. However, attempts were also made to market large agricultural machinery, such as combine harvesters , with electric motors. The use of internal combustion engines was the decisive development step in the fields, and the exhibition impressively traces the history using the exhibits.

Agriculture

The basement focuses on agricultural work and its changes. For a long time, muscle power was necessary for field work, but agriculture has become much more efficient thanks to the high-tech all-round machines. Scythes and flails have been replaced by the combine harvester , which combines cutting, threshing and packing. In order to counter the romantic stereotypes of modern farmers, a farmer's office was set up in the Agrarium. The scenery is determined by the computer , telephone bells and everyday office work. At the same time, the exhibition takes a look at today's possibilities to further increase efficiency. Pesticides and fertilizers are widely used in modern agriculture.

Food industry

The upper floor presents areas of the food industry. Sugar production , dairy farming , and spread production are some of the exhibition's sections. Agriculture began to intensify in the second half of the 19th century. Dairies and then farmers formed cooperatives in order to be able to distribute their food in large quantities. Inventions for preserving food were the most important achievements of the food industry of the time. Tins , pasteurization , freezing and boiling are among them.

financing

Around 5.7 million euros were invested in the Agrarium. In addition to a substantial amount from the European Regional Development Fund , the Harburg district also participated as a project sponsor. Other project partners were the Hamburg / Lower Saxony development fund of the Hamburg metropolitan region , the Lower Saxony Foundation , the Lower Saxony Sparkasse Foundation , the Lüneburg Landscape Association , the Rosengarten community , the Hans-Jürgen Weseloh Foundation, the "Hof Schlüter" Foundation, the Landscape College of the Principality of Lüneburg, the EWE AG , the Foundation of the Sparkasse Harburg-Buxtehude, Sparkasse Harburg-Buxtehude and the Friends of the museum on Kiekeberg.
