Agru Kunststofftechnik Gesellschaft mbH ( original spelling agru ) is a global plastics processing company based in Bad Hall , Austria , founded in 1948 by Mr. Alois Gruber sen. Founded. The provider of piping systems, semi-finished products , concrete protective sheets and sealing sheets made of technical plastics, with around 1020 employees and a turnover of 375 million EUR (2018), is one of the 130 largest industrial companies in Austria and one of the 50 largest companies in Upper Austria.

In addition to the five plants at the main location in Bad Hall , the company operates production facilities in the USA , Germany , Poland and China . The export share is over 90%. Sales partners in over 150 countries sell Agru products for which around 100,000 tons of plastic are processed annually.

Company history

Beginnings

Alois Gruber Sr. founded a locksmith's shop in Bad Hall and an anodizing company in Grünburg in 1948 . In the 1950s, the locksmith's shop was closed to focus on anodizing, which was expanded to include powder coating and a wet paint shop. These competencies are now combined in Agru Oberflächentechnik GmbH in Grünburg, Upper Austria . Agru Oberflächentechnik GmbH acts legally independently of Agru Kunststofftechnik GmbH, but is under the same management.

Entry into plastics technology

Alois Gruber sen. Laid the actual foundation stone for plastics technology. 1961 with the decision to start plastic pipe production. In the following years this area was continuously expanded. Initially with the production of polypropylene and polyethylene pipes , later also with the production of molded parts , plates, solid rods and welding wire made of various engineering plastics.

Pioneer in injection molding

As early as 1966, the first injection molding machines for the production of molded parts for pipeline construction were put into operation. This made Agru one of the first manufacturers in Europe to supply pipes and fittings from its own production. The productivity gain in production was enormous, because up to this point in time, molded parts had been segmented, ie welded together from individual pipe segments by hand. The production from one cast also increased the pressure resistance. Since injection molded plastic parts do not have any weld seams inside that could slow down the flow of media, the flow properties in the entire pipeline system also increased.

Internationalization of production

In the 1980s, Agru set up the first production site outside of Austria in Boston , USA. This marked the beginning of the international expansion of the family business. In 1991, Agru-Frank GmbH was founded in Wölfersheim , Germany , in cooperation with a German sales partner . In 1996, Agru America relocated the production site in the USA from Boston to Georgetown in South Carolina , which made it possible to expand production.

Further development of the molded parts

In 1997 AGRU started the production of electrofusion fittings and developed them continuously. A heating wire, the so-called heating coil , is poured or plowed into specially developed molded parts . By embedding the heating coil in the molded part , the sensitive wires are protected against damage or contamination from the outside, e.g. B. during assembly, safely protected. The welding itself is carried out by means of an electrical energy supply via a suitable electrofusion welding device.

Expansion of the company

In 1998 Mag. Alois Gruber, the son of the company's founder, Alois Gruber senior, took over the company and has been managing the business of AGRU ever since. The location in Bad Hall has been continuously expanded from the start. After the turn of the millennium, Agru set up plants III and IV at its headquarters. In addition, the family company set up additional production sites, some as joint ventures in Poland, China and the USA. In 2012 Agru started the production of large pipes up to a diameter of 2500 mm. With the construction of Plant V, an ISO class 5 clean room production facility, AGRU set a new industrial standard in 2016 for the manufacture of pipe systems for high-purity media applications, which are sold under the PURAD brand. These ultra-pure pipe systems have been developed for high-tech applications where absolute purity, excellent leaching behavior and high chemical resistance are prerequisites. Areas of application are, for example, the microelectronics, life science and food industries as well as ultrapure water systems in various sectors.
