Agua de Castilla is a town in the Potosí department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

Agua de Castilla is the second largest town in the canton of Cerro Gordo in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) of San Agustín in the province of Enrique Baldivieso . The village is located at an altitude of 3968  m on the banks of the Quebrada Agua de Castilla , whose episodic water flows towards the Río Alota .

Agua de Castilla is located on the Bolivian Altiplano between the Andes mountain ranges of the Cordillera Occidental in the west and the Cordillera de Lípez in the southeast.

The climate in this region in the southwest of the country is arid , only from January to March there is significant rainfall between 10 and 30 mm per month (see climate diagram Avaroa), in the remaining nine months there is only sporadic rainfall. The mean annual temperature of the region is around 7 ° C, the monthly mean temperatures fluctuate only slightly between 3 ° C in July and 10 ° C in January.

Agua de Castilla is located at a distance of 365 kilometers by road southwest of Potosí , the capital of the department of the same name.

From Potosí, the Ruta 5 trunk road leads 198 kilometers in a south-westerly direction to Uyuni , which is located on the Salar de Uyuni . South of Uyuni, a partially unpaved road continues in a south-westerly direction via San Cristóbal and after 145 kilometers reaches the village of Alota . From here an unpaved road leads in a south-easterly direction and reaches Agua de Castilla after 22 kilometers .

Due to the historically grown population distribution, the region has a high proportion of Quechua population, in the municipality of San Agustín 95.5 percent of the population speak the Quechua language.
