Aguelhok (also Aguelhok) is a municipality in the district of Tessalit in the Kidal region in Mali .

The place is in the Sahara near the border with Algeria (134 km as the crow flies) near Timiaouine and has 8,080 inhabitants. Most of its inhabitants belong to the Tuareg people .

history

At the end of January 2012, Adjelhoc was captured by the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA). The attackers killed several dozen government soldiers . Overall, the death toll is said to be between 80 and 100, including civilians. This resulted in protests, including in Bamako , and pogroms against members of the Tuareg.
