Agustarello Affre ( October 23, 1858 in Saint-Chinian , Hérault - December 27, 1931 in Cagnes-sur-Mer , Alpes-Maritimes ) was a French opera singer ( tenor ).

Life

After the director of the Paris Opera, Pierre Gailhard , became aware of his voice, he studied first at the Conservatory in Paris and then at the Paris Conservatory with Edmond Duvernoy .

He made his stage debut in Paris in 1890 as "Edgardo" in Lucia di Lammermoor alongside the then better-known Nellie Melba . He then celebrated such great success (including the world premiere of the opera Le mage by Jules Massenet on March 16, 1891) that he also took his leave there until 1911, when Gailhard left. During his time in Paris he hardly made any guest appearances.

Then he moved to America: in 1911 he was in San Francisco, in 1912 in New Orleans and in 1913 in Havana. After returning to Europe, he sang to French soldiers during the First World War.

He was considered a typical French hero tenor, who was referred to as "the French Tamagno ". But he also appeared in Mozart and Wagner roles.

His voice has been preserved on many records.
