Aharon Davidi (born 1927 in Tel Aviv ; died February 11, 2012 in Kirjat Ono ) was an Israeli brigadier general and university professor . In 1982 he started the volunteer program Sar-El of the Israeli armed forces .

Life

Military career

Davidis got involved with Hagana and Palmach from the age of fifteen . In the War of Independence of 1948 he fought on the southern front in the Negev - Brigade . In 1953 he reported to the newly formed parachute force and was used as a company commander. In 1953/54 his unit excelled in various retaliatory actions and commando operations.

On the evening of October 14, 1953, Ariel Sharon's unit 101 invaded the village of Qibya and carried out the Qibya massacre there. A company of paratroopers under the command of Davidi secured Sharon's flanks. In 1955 he was honored for bravery shown while serving in Gaza . In the Sinai campaign of 1956, as a lieutenant colonel , he took part in the capture of the Mitla pass .

In 1965 he was appointed first commander of the parachute and infantry corps. During the Six Day War he personally led the capture of Sharm El Sheikh and after Raful Eitan's wounded led his paratroopers to the Suez Canal . In 1970 he said goodbye to active military service as Brigadier General.

Civil life

Davidi studied geography in London and received his doctorate in 1973 on the problems of ethnic minorities in China . From 1974 he taught at Tel Aviv University . In 1977 he moved to the Golan to become director of community and cultural activities for the Golan and Jordan Valley. As a reserve officer, during the Lebanon War in 1982 , he initiated the Sar-El program for foreign volunteers in the Israeli army, which he directed for many years.

Private

Davidi's family originally came from the Bender town in Bessarabia . He had met his wife Hassida in the Negev Brigade during the War of Independence. He last lived in Ramat Gan and is the father of three children.
