Aharon Jehuda Leib Shteinman also: Aharon Jehuda Lejb Steinman ( Hebrew אהרן יהודה לייב שטינמן) (born November 14, 1913 in Brest , Russian Empire ; died December 12,  2017 in Bnei Berak ) was an Israeli rabbi , posek, and politician ( United Torah Judaism ). Life

Ahron Shteinman's year of birth cannot be precisely dated, since, according to Rabbi Joel Berger, many parents in Eastern Europe post-dated the date of birth of their sons in order to save them from military service. Shteinman was educated at Lithuanian yeshivot (Jewish universities for Torah studies) in the 1920s / 30s . In 1937 he fled to Switzerland before being drafted for military service. There he was interned. There he met his future wife Tamar, the daughter of the Antwerp rabbi Schammai Schraga Kornfeld. After the war ended , the couple emigrated to Israel.

In Bnei Berak he became head of the Lithuanian Orthodox Ponyevich Yeshiva. In the course of time he became the authoritative decisor (possek) in matters of the Talmud and on halachic authority.

In 1988 he helped found Degel haTora , an Ashkenazi ultra-Orthodox party in Israel, and became the supreme authority of the party, the Lithuanian educational institutions and the Lithuanian community. He was head of the world organization Agudath Israel .

According to press reports, around 200,000 mourners were present at his funeral in Bnei Berak, northeast of Tel Aviv-Jaffa .

Especially under the pseudonym Ajelet HaSchachar (German: "Gazelle of the dawn", AJeLeT = A haron J ehuda L eib T amar and based on Psalm 22 ) he wrote about 30 works on the Talmud.
