Agudath Israel World Organization (English Agudath Israel World Organization; AIWO for short ) ( Hebrew הסתדרות אגודת ישראל העולמית also הסתדרות החרדים העולמית אגדת ישראל: Histadrut Agudat Yiśraʼel ha-ʻolamit; also Histadrut ha-cḥaredim ha-ʻolamit Agudat Yiśraʼel ) is an international ultra-orthodox Jewish organization. The organization has members in 17 countries and on 4 continents. It has its own publishing house in Jerusalem. The Agudath Israel World Organization is based on Broadway 42 in New York.

history

The organization was founded in 1912 as the political arm of the Ashkenazi Torah movement in succession to the Agudas Shlumei Emunei Yisroel ( Union of Faithful Jewry ). The foundations include pre-Holocaust Judaism in Eastern Europe and the revival of Hasidism, which included Orthodox Judaism in Europe.

The association was led by an executive committee based in Vienna. A Rabbinical Council (Mo'etzet chachmeji haTora, Hebrew מועצת חכמי התורה) reviewed and ratified all major resolutions; the delegates of the national organization met every five years for the Kenessio Gedaulo (כנסיה גדולה, dt. "large assembly").

For the educational work, the aid fund Keren haTora (קרן התורה) based in Vienna. The Yidisches Togblatt (in Yiddish ) and Der Israelit (Frankfurt am Main), as well as the Jüdische Korrespondenz (Vienna) and the Jewish press ( Bratislava and Vienna) were close to the Aguda .

Poland (1916–1939)

During the First World War , Pinchas Kohn and Rabbi Emanuel Carlebach from Germany were instructed to act as rabbinical advisers for the German occupying power in Poland . Well-known members of the Agudath Yisroel were Abraham Mordechai Alter , Mordechai Yosef Elazar Leiner and Yisrael Meir Kagan . In 1939 the existence of the אגודת ישראל בפולין ended.

Latvia

In Latvia, Agudath Israel , chaired by Mordechai Dubin , was represented in the local parliament, the Saeima , from 1922 to 1934 .

Slovakia

Another representative of Agudath Israel was Chaim Michael Dov Weissmandl . Even when he was at Oxford University , Weissmandl preferred to return to Slovakia on September 1, 1939, the first day of World War II, as a representative of World Agudath Israel .

Great Britain

In Great Britain, the Agudath Israel , represented by the Adath Israel Synagogue , was founded in 1909, followed by the Union of Orthodox Hebrew Congregations , which was founded in 1926. In 1943 it represented 5,000 families, chaired by Rabbi Solomon Schonfeld . The British secretary of the Agudath Israel World Organization , the political arm of the religious movement, was Harry Goodman , editor of the Jewish Weekly . He played a key role in the Agudath Israel Organization during World War II .
