Meir Schapira

Meir Schapira (also Yehuda Meir Shapiro ; Hebrew יהודה מאיר שפירא; born March 3, 1887 in Suczawa , Romania ; died October 27, 1933 in Łódź ), son of Yaakov Shimshon, was a Hasidic rabbi and Rosh Yeshiva , also known as the Lublin rabbi. The age of 16 he became a rabbi Yitzchak Yehuda Shmelkes, the rabbi of Lvov (now Lviv) ordained . At 19 he married Malka Tova, a daughter of Yaakov Breitman from Tarnopol (now Ternopil) , where he lived for the next few years.

In 1912 he became a rabbi in Gliniany (now Hlynjany). From 1921 to 1924 he was rabbi in Sanok , then in Piotrków Trybunalski . In 1922 he was elected chairman of the Agudat Israel in all of Poland and became its representative in the Sejm (in the electoral term until 1927).

He is known for issuing the Daf Jomi study program in 1923 and for founding the Khachmei Lublin Yeshiva in 1930. Shapiro introduced the idea of ​​Daf Jomi ( Hebrew דף יומי, “Daily Journal”) with a daily examination of the Babylonian Talmud. Rabbi Shapiro presented his idea at the first World Congress of the World Agudath Israel in Vienna on August 16, 1923. The first cycle of Daf Jomi began on the first day of Rosh Hashanah 5684 (September 11, 1923).

After he died in Łódź due to a brief illness, he was buried in Lublin and later reburied on the Har HaMenuchos in Jerusalem .
