Ahlsburg

The Ahlsburg , also called Alerdestein , Mahlsburg , Wahlburg , in the Ecker valley near Ilsenburg in the Harz district of Saxony-Anhalt is the ruins of an imperial and hilltop castle in the Harz low mountain range .

Geographical location

The location of the former hilltop castle is in the northern foothills of the Harz Mountains and in the north of the Harz National Park , about 4 km west of Ilsenburg , 4.5 km south-southwest of Stapelburg and 4 km (as the crow flies ) north-northeast of the Eckertalsperre . Belonging to the urban area of Ilsenburg, it lies above the right or eastern bank of the Ecker , a south-eastern tributary of the Oker , which forms the state border with Lower Saxony , which is adjacent to the west . The castle stood 15 meters above a bridge at a narrow point in the valley, surrounded on three sides by the Ecker, on a mountain spur with steeply sloping granite cliffs.

history

Alardus von Burgdorf , mentioned in 1218, is associated with the Ahlsburg, especially since his descendants are mentioned there in the 14th century. The castle, which was probably built in the 12th century, was first mentioned in a document in 1357 as the Alerdestein, when Emperor Karl IV. Alard the Elder. Ä. and Alard d. J. von Burgdorf enfeoffed 1½ hooves near Wollingerode , which belong to the Alerdestein . It was part of the imperial estate and the royal palace Werla . In the early modern times, the castle fell into ruin. Their property fell to the Counts of Stolberg .

The lords of the castle were responsible for protecting the surrounding Reichsbannforst.

Later the birch pioneer forest crossed the former inner-German border .

Today only remains of the foundations, foundation walls and the moat are left of the Ahlsburg .
