Ahmed Attaf

Ahmed Attaf (born July 10, 1953 in Ain Defla , Ain Defla Province ) is an Algerian diplomat and politician .

biography

Attaf began his professional career as a diplomat in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he became head of the multilateral agreements department for a short time in 1977 . In the same year he became head of the political affairs department of the OAU and then in 1979 moved to the Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York City as secretary .

In 1982 he returned to Algeria and became Deputy Director for the United Nations, Strategy and Disarmament at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He was then director of international politics there from 1984 to 1989. In 1989 he was appointed ambassador to Yugoslavia and then from 1992 to 1994 as ambassador to India .

On his return in March 1994 he became State Secretary for Cooperation and Affairs of the Maghreb . He retained this office when he also became government spokesman in October 1994 . In January 1996, Attef was finally appointed foreign minister to the government of Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia . He held this office under Ouyahia's successor as Prime Minister, Smail Hamdani , from December 1998 to December 1999.

Attef was also elected a member of the National People's Assembly in June 1997 .
