Ahmed Basiony

Ahmed Basiony (* 1978 in Cairo ; † January 28, 2011 there ) was an Egyptian media and video artist .

life and work

Ahmed Basiony graduated from Helwan University as an art teacher in 2000. He taught and studied up to the master in the field of sound art . He then worked on his doctoral thesis on the visual aspects of open source programming in relation to the concepts of digital art . Basiony worked in various media. At first he created large-format expressionist paintings, then from 2001 to 2005 he turned to installation , new media and multimedia .

The performance 30 Days of Running in the Space (2010) was presented at the Biennale di Venezia as a media installation on five screens.

On January 25, 2011, Ahmed Basiony started the demonstration in Tahrir Square in Cairo. Basiony died on January 28, 2011 of the gunshot wounds inflicted on him by the snipers of the Egyptian police. An excerpt from his last video was shown at dOCUMENTA (13) .
