The Aiguamolls de l'Empordà

Aiguamolls (, marshes of the Empordà ') is the name for an under nature conservation standing wetland in the region Empordà in Catalonia , created mainly by the final river course of the rivers Fluvià and La Muga . In total, the Parc Natural dels Aiguamolls de l'Empordà covers an area of around 4,824 hectares, which have been legally protected since 1983. The ornithological diversity of species plays a role here, as many migratory birds use the area as a resting area on their migrations between Europe and Africa. Along with the mouth of the Ebro River , this wetland is one of the most important in Catalonia.

Nine municipalities are affected by the nature protection regulations: Pau , Roses , Pedret i Marzà , Peralada , Palau-saverdera , L'Armentera , L'Escala , Sant Pere Pescador and Castelló d'Empúries . In 1995, the park administration began to reintroduce the otter to the Fluvià and La Muga rivers .
