Aiman Omarowa ( Kazakh Айман Омарова ; born in Dschambulskaja oblast , Kazakh SSR , Soviet Union ) is a Kazakh lawyer and human rights - activist . In 2018 she received the International Women of Courage Award from the United States Department of State for her commitment to the rights of women and children and against their sexual abuse .

Life

Omarova was born in a small town in the Shambyl area in southern Kazakhstan. At first she worked as an investigator in the law enforcement agencies . In addition to her job, she completed an additional law degree . Omarova is now a lawyer and defense attorney at the regional court in Almaty . She is a member of an Expert Council on Human Rights Issues under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan .

Omarova has two children.

Commitment and honor

Omarowa has worked as an attorney on many rape , child abuse and sexual harassment cases in prisons . As a result of the patriarchal society in her home country, she complains that sexual crimes against women are forensically and medically more negligently examined and judicially more lenient. Her clients also include political prisoners .

Omarova founded the movement «# НеМолчи .kz » (do not be silent) in Kazakhstan . In the political newspaper “DAT” she writes the “Zona.kz” column , which deals with the topics of imprisonment, torture and violence in prisons, as well as human rights.

On March 23, 2018, Aiman ​​Omarowa was the first Kazakh woman to receive the “ International Women of Courage Award ”. Among the ten winners of the year were women from Afghanistan , Africa and Central America . The award was given to them by Melania Trump .

There were numerous attempts to threaten Omarova or to slander him anonymously . She is working on a book about sexual harassment.
