The early Haferschmiele ( Aira praecox ) is a species of the sweet grass family (Poaceae).

description

The early Haferschmiele is annual, grows clumpy and is up to 15 cm high. The bare leaves are bristly rolled up. The ligule is fringed and 1 to 3 mm long. The panicle is contracted like a spike and consists of 2 to 3 mm long, two-flowered spikelets . The dorsal awn of the lemma is 3 to 4 mm long.

The plant blooms in May and June.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 14.

Location requirements

The early Haferschmiele colonized mainly semi-arid and dry grasslands as well as ruderal sites and fallow land on acidic sites. It thrives on dry, nutrient-poor and base-poor, acidic, humus and fine earth poor, sandy or gravel soils. It is a character species of the Airetum praecocis from the Thero-Airion association.

The natural occurrence of the species is limited to the area of ​​Europe to northwestern Turkey and Macaronesia. In many other countries, such as North America and New Zealand, it is a neophyte.
