The Airdale Backcountry is an American kit plane developed by Brett McKinney based on John Larsen's Avid Mk IV . It was built by the Airdale Flyer Company of Rhinelander , Wisconsin . In 2017 the company ceased operations and production ended with it.
development and construction
The Backcountry is a single-engine, two-seater, braced high-decker with a tail wheel chassis . The fuselage consists of fabric-covered, welded steel tubes . The wings consist of an aluminum construction , which is also covered with painted fabric. The wings have a wingspan of 30 ft (9.1 m ), an area of 123 ft² (11.4 m² ) and have flaperons .
The back country is driven by a Stratus-EA-81 - four-cylinder engine with 100 horsepower (74 kW ).
The changes compared to the Avid Flyer mainly served to meet the European Joint Aviation Requirements with a total weight of 1,400 lb (635 kg ). To do this, the fuselage was stretched 16 in (406 mm ). The main landing gear received landing gear legs made of aluminum with a track width of 74 in (1.9 m). The angle of the windshield was enlarged, the flight controls were simplified and the wings got flaperons. The cockpit has been modified to allow better access to the luggage compartment. In addition, new seats have increased head and legroom. The cockpit and doors have been widened. The tail wheel spring has been strengthened and the cowling has been redesigned to accommodate other engines.
A conversion kit for converting an Avid Flyer to a backcountry was also offered.
