Airline Tycoon ( AT for short ) is a computer game series in the business simulation genre , Part 1 of which was developed by Spellbound and published in August 1998. The airline manager's sequel - Airline Tycoon 2 - was released by Kalypso Media in October 2011 .

Gameplay

At Airline Tycoon you manage an airline . You have three competitors , each with a special style of play. At the beginning of the game you can choose one of four players, the others are taken over by the computer. Each tycoon has a certain character and therefore of course advantages and disadvantages (e.g. is sabotaged particularly often or lets his planes come down, etc.). You can also ally or become enemies with the other competitors.

In free play you have to run an airline according to your wishes. Before you start, you have to select the base airport in which you will be staying. You can now use your airplanes for cargo or passenger flights between cities around the world. Of the aircraft available for selection, some are very modern (e.g. Boeing 777-300 , Boeing 747-400 ), but others are also not (e.g. Tupolev ). Quite a few aircraft have been available since the beginning of the jet aircraft age, but the modern Airbus wide-body aircraft are completely lacking . At the beginning you have start-up capital and two medium-range aircraft, others you can buy new or used. In the Evolution and Deluxe parts you can also design your own planes and there is a security office where you can protect yourself from acts of sabotage.

The missions range from simple passenger transport to the construction of a rocket launch pad .

Publications

Airline Tycoon has also been translated into English , French and Polish and allows first class multiplayer games for two to four players over a local network or the Internet . From Evolution on , game records can be published and viewed on a ranking list on the official game website and aircraft that you have assembled yourself can be exchanged.

Airline Tycoon 2 was officially announced on May 24, 2006, and the developers are expected to hit stores nine years after Part One was published. However, this was still extremely dubious as the developers of Airline Tycoon 2 were feverishly looking for a publisher . Unlike Airline Tycoon , the second part will be in 3D, but the comic graphics should be retained. AT2 was put on hold after some development time and for a long time it was not known whether the game would even be released. Fans of the series tried to make a second part possible through an online petition. The Kalypso petition creator's website was later made the official fan page.

On October 22, 2009, Spellbound announced that the publisher Kalypso Media had acquired the worldwide naming and marketing rights to Airline Tycoon 2 . However, the game should not be developed by Spellbound, but by the company's own developer studio Realmforge from Munich. The existing code base should not be used, but a completely new development should take place. A publication was planned for the first quarter of 2011.

On September 29, 2010, Kalypso Media announced that Airline Tycoon 2 was not being developed by Realmforge, but by B-Alive, who are responsible for the Wildlife Park series. The game was released on October 13, 2011.

On March 24, 2015 Airline Tycoon Deluxe was re- released on the digital distribution platform gog.com , including the source code .

criticism

AT Evolution was sold as a full-price game, although its content is only an add-on . According to Armin Gessert , however, the publisher is to blame for this.

  2. gog.com team: Release: Airline Tycoon Deluxe ( English ) gog.com. March 24, 2015. Retrieved August 1, 2015: “ Airline Tycoon Deluxe is a golden oldie with native versions for Mac OS X and Linux. As an added bonus, the package comes with the game's Windows source code for your viewing and tweaking pleasure. You sure don't see that every day. "
