The Airport (abbreviated: "Air") is a discotheque in the Lower Franconian city of Würzburg owned by Bambule Entertainment GmbH and is widely known due to its importance in the house and techno scene.

history

The club first opened its doors in October 1983 in the building of a former wholesale market in the east of Würzburg. The club was modeled on an airport terminal and the DJ desk was designed as a cockpit . The airport was expanded for the first time about a year later, when the Rockpalast was opened in the other part of the hall , with a music concept that was more rocky than the airport . In the mid-1980s, the “double-decker evening” was introduced, thereby opening up a new clientele for the airport with students and schoolchildren.

The music played in the airport was based on the zeitgeist with hip-hop , house, funk , soul and acid and in the early 1990s techno found its way into the airport, which was initially only played in the Noise Club, but due to its growing importance and popularity also soon ran in the big club. In the following years, the greats of the German techno scene like Sven Väth , Paul van Dyk etc. A brief change occurred in 1994 when the hall was sold and the club moved to the so-called Loveboat . This interlude lasted six months and at Whitsun the following year the airport reopened in its familiar surroundings. There was one change anyway, because the airport decoration had disappeared and the airport showed a completely different side. However, the music stayed the same.

In March 2015, Bambule Entertainment GmbH took over the management of the airport from Air Diskothekenbetriebs GmbH, which had operated up until then.

particularities

Due to the two complete entrance areas (due to the integration of the formerly independent Rockpalast disco), the operators are able to offer graduated admission prices on special evenings. If you use the main box office at T1, you get access to the entire discotheque, but you have to pay a higher entrance fee. If you use the entrance at the Soundpark (former Rockpalast), you pay the normal price, but you are not allowed to enter T1. This rule is usually used on Fridays and Saturdays, especially when celebrity guest DJs are playing.
