The Akdeniz was a passenger ship of the Turkish Türkiye Denizcilik İşletmeleri , which was completed in 1955. The ship, which was later also used for cruises , remained in service until 1996 and was then used as a stationary training ship before arriving in Aliağa, Turkey, in September 2015 after a sixty-year career .
history
The Akdeniz was created under the hull number 1293 at the AG Weser in Bremen and was launched on September 1, 1955th After her delivery to the Türkiye Denizcilik İşletmeleri (TDI) on December 31, 1955, the ship began the liner service from Istanbul along the Turkish coast to the Black Sea .
Later in her career, the Akdeniz was used for cruises. From 1988 to 1989, the hull was painted black before being painted white again. From 1991 the ship made several trips for the German travel company Phoenix Reisen .
After 41 years in service, the Akdeniz was retired in 1996 and sold to the Turkish Navy to be used as a stationary training ship for the Naval Academy in Tuzla from July 1997 . From 2006 she was also used as a residential ship for students.
After the ship's maintenance costs became too expensive, the Naval Academy decided to sell it for scrap in September 2015. The Akdeniz arrived in Aliağa that same month . The demolition work was finished by spring 2016. The main mast and furnishings of the ship were removed before the demolition to be exhibited on the university campus in Tuzla.
