Akira Satō ( Japanese 佐藤 晃 , Satō Akira ; born July 19, 1964 in Kyōgoku , Hokkaidō ) is a former Japanese ski jumper .

Career

Satō began his international career starting at the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1985 in Seefeld in Tyrol . He reached 16th place on the normal hill, 17th on the large hill and 6th in team competition. On December 30, 1985 he made his debut in the ski jumping World Cup in Oberstdorf . Until 1987, however, he only jumped to the back of the World Cup. Surprisingly, he was able to win his first and only World Cup competition on January 24, 1987 when jumping in Sapporo . It was also his first competition in which he was able to win World Cup points. At the end of the 1986/87 season he finished 25th in the overall World Cup ranking. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1987 in Oberstdorf, Satō jumped from the normal hill to 24th place. Satō was part of the Japanese squad for the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary , where he jumped from the normal hill to 11th and from the large hill to 33rd place. In the team competition he jumped to 11th and last place together with Masaru Nagaoka , Katsushi Tao and Shin'ichi Tanaka . After the games, he could no longer build on his successes of previous years. From 1990 he only started at jumping in Sapporo before he switched to the newly created Ski Jumping Continental Cup for another three years in 1992 . There he could not achieve any successes and ended his active ski jumping career in 1995.
