Aksel Svane

Aksel Svane (also Axel Svane ; born August 2, 1898 in Copenhagen ; † November 30, 1991 ) was a Danish lawyer , civil servant and countryman of Greenland .

Life

Aksel Svane graduated as a lawyer in 1924. He then worked as a volunteer with the judge of the South Copenhagen Birks and as a secretary in the tax authorities. In the same year he began a world tour by motorcycle, which lasted until 1925. In 1926 he became an agent in the Færø Office ( Faroe Islands ). In 1929 he was employed as a secretary in the Landbrugsministeriet . In 1932 he was appointed Landsfoged of South Greenland . In 1940 Denmark was annexed by the German Reich during World War II , while Greenland fell under US occupation. So Svane traveled to the United States in 1941 to represent Greenland's interests vis-à-vis the United States and Canada . So he resigned and his colleague Eske Brun from northern Greenland also took over the southern governorate. From 1940 to 1945 he was responsible for mining the cryolite in Ivittuut . From 1946 he was a member of the Greenlandic Wages Committee. From 1947 to 1948 he worked in the Justitsministeriet and was then head of the legal and personnel office of the Greenland administration. In 1950 he was employed in the new Grønlandsdepartement . In 1951 he was head of the Greenland Law Committee. From 1953 he was a commissioner in the State Ministry and from 1955 in the newly founded Greenland Ministry , where he did not leave until 1968. In 1955 he was a member of the Council of the Arctic Institute. Svane died on November 30, 1991 at the age of 93. He was a first class knight of the Dannebrog Order .

family

Aksel Svane was the son of the school inspector Iver Kristian Svane (1867-1939) and his wife Jenny Caroline Camilla Petersen († 1948). His first marriage was Else Flensborg (1904–1954) in 1931 and, after her death in 1956, Fritze Gerda Tinne Holm (1910–1991), who died just two days after him.
