Eske Brun (born May 25, 1904 in Aalborg , † October 11, 1987 in Søllerød ) was a Danish civil servant , lawyer and Landsfoged of Greenland .

Life

At the age of 18 Eske Brun began to study law in Ordrup . In 1929 he graduated as cand. Iur. from. He then worked as a secretary in the tax authorities. In 1934 he became secretary in the Greenland administration. From 1932 to 1936 he was Deputy Landsfoged in both parts of Greenland: first in Northern Greenland , then in Southern Greenland and finally again in Northern Greenland. In 1939 he succeeded Philip Rosendahl as Landsfoged North Greenland. A year later Denmark was occupied by the German Empire , but Greenland by the United States . A colonial administration controlled from Denmark had thus become impossible.

With the help of Grønlands Landsråd, Brun and his colleague Aksel Svane from South Greenland began to have the country run through the USA. In 1941 Svane traveled to the USA and Brun moved from Qeqertarsuaq to Nuuk to also administer South Greenland. This meant that for the first time since 1731 Greenland was unified under the administration of one person. The situation in Greenland was complicated during this period . Greenland was on the one hand a colony of an occupied country, on the other hand it was occupied by another country, and with a population that was striving for nothing but independence. In 1941 the United States imposed a defense agreement on Brun and Svane, which established numerous military bases in Greenland.

With the end of the war, the American occupation ended and Brun lost his office. In 1947 he became Vice Director of the Greenland Administration because he was valued for his knowledge and commitment during the difficult war. In 1949 Knud Oldendow retired and Brun was promoted to director. In the following year there was an administrative reform and the administrative sovereignty of Greenland passed from Den Kongelige Grønlandske Handel to the Danish state. From now on the Grønlandsdepartement was responsible. Brun thus became head of the state administration from the head of the trade administration and therefore played a major role in the reorganization of Greenland policy. In 1964 he retired. From 1949 he was vice-chairman of the Greenlandic Science Commission, from 1964 its chairman. He was also a member of the Arctic Institute and Fellow of the Arctic Institute of North America from 1954 to 1975 . In 1965 he was made an honorary member of the Greenland Society .

Eske Brun was made a knight of the Dannebrog Order in 1947 . In 1950 he became Dannebrogmand . In 1955 he became Commander 2nd Class and in 1963 Commander 1st Class . He was also the holder of the Order of Saint Olav .
