Aksel Tamm

Aksel Tamm (born December 23, 1931 in Tallinn ) is an Estonian literary scholar , critic and publicist.

Life

Aksel Tamm started school in Estonia before the war, but spent the years of World War II in the Soviet hinterland. He graduated from high school in Tallinn in 1950. From 1950 to 1956 he studied Estonian philology at the University of Tartu and graduated with a thesis on Jaan Kärner . After a few years as a doctoral student - a thesis on Friedebert Tuglas was planned - he joined the editorial team of the literary magazine Looming in 1958 , where he headed the journalism department. From 1961 he held various functions within the Estonian Writers' Union and in the publishing industry. From 1966 to 1982 he worked as editor-in-chief at the Estonian state publisher “Eesti Raamat”, then from 1983 to 1995 he was editor-in-chief of the magazine Keel ja Kirjandus . He then worked for several years as an advisor to President Lennart Meri .

Aksel Tamm has been a member of the Estonian Writers' Union since 1966.

Aksel Tamm has been writing columns and features since 1945 and appeared as a critic from 1952. In this area he is also known as a moderator of literary programs on radio and television. He focused on modern Estonian literature and general Soviet literature.

Aksel Tamm has also translated from Russian, including works by Ilja Ehrenburg and I. Grekowa .
