Alton Minor Coppage (* 8. February 1916 in Hollis , Oklahoma ; † 9. January 1992 , ibid), nicknamed "Cop" was a US American football player . He played as an end in the National Football League (NFL) with the Chicago Cardinals and in the All-America Football Conference (AAFC) with the Cleveland Browns and Buffalo Bills .
career
Al Coppage played American football while studying at the University of Oklahoma , but was also active as a sprinter in athletics . In 1940 he was selected by the by Jimmy Conzelman trained Chicago Cardinals in the eleventh round of the 111th spot drafted . Coppage played one end for the Cardinals . He did not win a title with the Cardinals. After the 1942 season , Coppage did his military service with the US Air Force , where he played football with the "Amarillo Air Force Base Sky Giants". After serving in the Army, Coppage returned to professional sports and joined the Cleveland Browns who played in the newly formed AAFC. The team was coached by Paul Brown , who was able to lead the team into the AAFC final in 1946 . The Browns won the game against the New York Yankees 14: 9. After another playing year at the Buffalo Bills, Al Coppage ended his career. He then first worked in the wood industry and was then Vice Director of the First State Bank of Gould for 20 years . Al Coppage is buried in Fairmount Cemetery in Hollis.
