Al Morgan

Albert Morgan (born August 19, 1908 in New Orleans , † April 14, 1974 in Los Angeles ) was an American jazz musician .

The double bass and tuba player Al Morgan came from a musical family in New Orleans. His brothers were also active as musicians ( Sam and Isaiah as trumpeters, Andrew as clarinetists). He first played the clarinet before switching to bass instruments around 1919 (lessons with Simon Marrero). He began his career in the 1920s in the orchestras of Buddy Petit and Lee Collins . He played briefly with Otto Hardwick in the 1930s, then recorded and toured with Cab Calloway . He then worked at Les Hite and then founded his own band. In the 1940s he was active with Wingy Manone , Eddie Condon , Chu Berry and Max Kaminsky .
