Sam Morgan

Sam Morgan (* 18th December 1887 in Bertrand Ville , Louisiana ; † 25. February 1936 in New Orleans ) was an American New Orleans Jazz - cornet player and bandleader.

Life

Sam Morgan led one of the classic New Orleans jazz bands in the 1920s, u. a. with Jim Robinson ; his recordings from 1927 (two sessions with a total of 8 tracks from April 14th and October 22nd are the only known recordings) are considered by the authors Richard Cook and Brian Morton as rare evidence of this music, which was recorded in New Orleans. The Sam Morgan's Jazz Band recorded titles such as Steppin 'on the Ga or Mobile Stomp for Columbia Records ; performing musicians were his brothers Isaiah Morgan on trumpet and Andrew Morgan on tenor saxophone (and clarinet); Earl Fouche played the alto saxophone and the trombonist was Jim Robinson , who later played with Bunk Johnson , George Lewis and performed at the Preservation Hall . Bassist was Jim Robinson's cousin Sidney Brown (aka Little Jim or Jim Little ); later he worked with George Lewis, as in his Climax sessions in the 1940s. Henry "Red" Allen and Fate Marable also played in his bands at times . An illness ended San Morgan's career prematurely in 1932; he died in 1936.
