Alan Watt (diplomat)

Sir Alan Stewart Watt CBE (born April 13, 1901 in Croydon , Sydney , † September 18, 1988 in Aranda, Canberra ) was an Australian diplomat and tennis player .

Life

Alan Watt was the ninth of ten children of the Scottish entrepreneur George Watt and his wife Susan, who comes from South Africa . In 1921 he received a Rhodes Scholarship and began studying philosophy , political science and economics at Oriel College , Oxford .

From 1922 to 1924 Watt played tennis for the university team, in 1924 he was their captain. In the same year he took part in the Wimbledon Championships and reached the second round.

Alan Watt returned to Australia, but returned the following year to marry his wife Mildred. From 1928 to 1932 he worked as an instructor for British Tobacco workers in Australia. He then became an assistant judge at the New South Wales Supreme Court and was admitted to the bar in 1932. In December 1936 he became an employee of the Australian Foreign Ministry. He stood out for his "stubborn [Scottish] integrity".

From 1940 to 1945 Watt was Legation Councilor in Washington , from 1947 envoy and from 1949 to 1950 ambassador to Moscow . He was ambassador to Singapore in 1954, Japan (1956 to 1959) and Germany (1960 to 1962). He published several books and retired articles, including his memoir .
