Alan from Auxerre

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alan of Auxerre († October 14, 1185 ), also called Alanus of Auxerre or Alain of Auxerre , was a Cistercian abbot and biographer of Bernhard von Clairvaux .

Alan was born in Flanders , probably in Lille . The time of his birth is unknown. He entered the Cistercian Order under Bernhard von Clairvaux and became abbot of the Larrivour monastery in 1140 . In 1152 he was elected Bishop of Auxerre , but resigned this office in 1167 and returned to Clairvaux as a simple monk , where he last lived in Bernhard's former cell and wrote a biography of the saint. Alan died in Clairvaux on October 14, 1185.

Alan of Auxerre must not be confused with the scholastic Alan of Lille , who was also a Cistercian monk and came from the same homeland, but was a lot younger.
