Albéric Clément

Albéric Clément ( German also Alberich , * around 1165 ; † July 3, 1191 in Akkon ) was lord of Le Mez and under Philip II August the first marshal of France .

Life

Albéric was the eldest of six Robert III children . Clément († 1181), who was first governor and from 1180 adviser and minister of Philip II August. He grew up in the family's castle near Dordives in the Gâtinais region .

Philip August created the rank of Marshal for Albéric Clément in 1190, making him the first Marshal of France. Albéric followed Philipp August into the Third Crusade . During an assault on Acre he was defeated by an overwhelming number of opponents and died on July 3, 1191. His armor was captured by a Saracen who was spotted wearing it by Richard the Lionheart a little later and personally killed by him with a shot from a ballista .

His brother Henri I. Clément was appointed Marshal of France after him in 1204, as the second of a total of four marshals from the Clément du Mez family.
