The cargo ship type Albatros was a type series in the German Democratic Republic . The first two container ships in the GDR were of this type.

history

The cormorant leaving Rostock

The series was manufactured in eight units from 1961 to 1965. The ships were mainly used in the North and Baltic Sea areas, for example in the Rostock-Riga joint service with the USSR.

The first ship and namesake of the series was the Albatros with hull number 516, handed over to the Deutsche Seereederei on June 6, 1961. The Rostock-based Albatros was sold in 1981 and was lost at sea on December 6, 1994 as Shelby Star . The last ship in the series was the Seeadler with hull number 523, handed over on June 17, 1965. The Falcon and the Penguin were converted into container ships in 1967/68 and opened the GDR's first container liner service to Great Britain . The only surviving example is the former Condor , which now serves as a floating school camp and leisure facility Likedeeler in Rostock .

technology

The Albatros in the Wismar seaport

The ships were driven by a 1004 kW 4-stroke diesel engine of the type 6NVD66 Au from the manufacturer VEB Maschinenbau Halberstadt, which acts on a fixed propeller via a reduction gear with hydraulic clutch.

As in the previous series, the predominantly welded ice-reinforced hulls were joined together in sectional construction. The superstructures are made of light metal.

The two holds with a ball space of 3077 m 3 and a grain space of 3300 m 3 had an intermediate deck and were closed off sea- proof with conventional shear sticks , covers and tarpaulins . The loading gear consisted of eight cargo booms for 3/5 tons each, which were attached to three pairs of loading masts.
