Albert Curtz (born October 14, 1600 in Munich ; † December 19, 1671 there ; Latin spelling: Albertus Curtius ) was a Bavarian Jesuit , writer and translator as well as an important astronomer.

After graduating from high school in 1616 at the Jesuit high school in Munich (today: Wilhelmsgymnasium Munich ) he entered the Jesuit order, was then a teacher of mathematics and ethics in Dillingen an der Donau (1626–1629), later cathedral preacher at St. Stephan in Vienna and from 1646 rector of the college in Nuremberg.

In his scientific works he dealt under the pseudonym Lucius Barrettus , an anagram of his Latinized name with allusion to the priestly headgear , especially with the exploration of the moon and continued the work of Tycho Brahe in his work Historia coelestis . Along with Johann Deckers , Johannes Kepler , Francesco Maria Grimaldi and Giambattista Riccioli, he is one of the most important researchers of the Earth's moon in the Baroque period.

His literary works, including his psalm translation Die Harpffen Davids mit Teutschen Saitenet (Augsburg, 1659), he published in German, using the Upper German writing language common in southern Germany, Austria and Switzerland . In doing so, he consciously opposed the East Central German writing language, which was already associated with higher prestige in his time, such as that propagated by Martin Opitz , and justified this decision in his work. His writing style shows similarities to the language of his contemporary, the Bavarian Baroque poet Johannes Kuen .

In praise of God is his song Your praise, Lord of heaven cries out in an arrangement by Adolf Lohmann included (no. 381).

The lunar crater Curtius is named after him.
