Gütersloh is the seat of the Gütersloh District Court , which is responsible for the cities of Gütersloh, Harsewinkel and Verl in the Gütersloh district. Around 146,000 people live in the 283 km² judicial district .
Superior courts
The regional court above the Gütersloh District Court is the Bielefeld Regional Court , which in turn is subordinate to the Hamm Higher Regional Court .
building
The service building , which was built in 1959, was listed as a historical monument in 1998 , which amazed many citizens who found the building relatively inconspicuous. However, it is the “only courthouse in the formal language of the 1950s”, as stated in the memorial's registration notice. Like the previous building of the district court, which was built in 1907/08, the so-called old district court in downtown Gütersloh, many German courthouses were built in the historicism phase , whereas only a few new buildings were built in the post-war period. While the courthouses, which were built during the German Reich and Prussia, appear representative and authoritarian, the courts built after the Second World War, such as the Gütersloh District Court, were meant to express the modern understanding of democracy through their clear structure. The notification of registration therefore states: "There is a public interest in preservation and use for scientific, in particular legal and regional historical reasons."
A prison built next to the district court and commissioned in 1961 was demolished in 2003.
For special attention
The Gütersloh District Court is not housed with all of its functions in the building on Friedrich-Ebert-Straße that is described and shown in more detail above. For example, guardianship and care matters, family matters, inheritance and foreclosure matters can be found in the branch on Berliner Straße.
