Albert Forbiger (born November 2, 1798 in Leipzig , †  March 11, 1878 in Dresden ) was a German classical philologist and teacher.

Life

Forbiger attended the Leipzig Nikolaischule , which was then headed by his father, Gottlieb Samuel Forbiger (1751-1828). After his studies (1815-1819) and his habilitation (1824) he became a teacher at his old school in 1824. In addition, he gave regular courses until 1829 at the University of Leipzig , particularly on the "geography of the ancient Greeks and Romans". In 1835 he became vice principal of the Nikolaischule and stayed there until his retirement. He then moved to Dresden and continued to pursue philological studies. He is known, among other things, for his three-volume edition of Vergil (Leipzig 1836–39).
