In the summer of 1897 he met Bernhard Mannfeld , who had been director of the State University of Fine Arts - Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main from 1895 . Mannfeld brought Hartmann to teach at the Städelsche Kunstschule in 1897/98. There he met Wilhelm Trübner , who had also worked at the Städel since 1895. Trübner and Hartmann mutually influenced each other. Numerous works were created during a joint study trip to Amorbach in 1898.
