Albert Herz (medic, 1921)

Albert Herz (born June 5, 1921 in Sonthofen ; † November 9, 2018 ) was a German neuropharmacologist .

Life

Albert Herz studied medicine at the Ludwig Maximilians University and received his doctorate there in 1948. He then worked in the fields of pathology , internal medicine and pharmacology at LMU . He completed his habilitation in pharmacology and toxicology before moving to the theoretical branch of the Max Planck Institute for Psychiatry in 1962 . In 1969 Albert Herz was one of the founders of the International Organization for Research on Narcotics . In 1972 he became director of the neuropharmacology department, which was recognized as an independent Max Planck Institute for Neurobiology in 1998 . Since 1989, Herz was an emeritus scientific member of the institute.

research

Together with his team, Albert Herz researched the mechanisms of action of morphine and methadone in the brain. Among other things, he was able to determine in which brain region morphine works and identify new opioids . He also dealt with the addictive potential of painkillers and drug addiction .
