Albert Kwesi Ocran

Albert Kwesi Ocran (* July 21, 1929 - March 23 or March 24, 2019 in Brakwa, Asikuma / Odoben / Brakwa District ) was a Ghanaian military and politician. With the rank of Colonel , Orcan was commander of the first brigade in Accra and as such was instrumental in the coup d'état against Kwame Nkrumah on February 24, 1966 .

Coup against Nkrumah

Ocran became a member of the government organ of the military junta , the National Liberation Council (NLC) , after the overthrow of Ghanaian President Nkrumah on February 24, 1966, at the age of only 36 . Between the takeover of power and September 3, 1969, the National Liberation Council (NLC) ruled, but in early September 1969 handed over the business of government to the Presidential Commission in preparation for the transition of government to a civilian government. Between September 3, 1969 and August 7, 1970, Ocran was a member of the three-person Presidential Commission and thus one of the most powerful men in Ghana alongside John Willie Kofi Harlley and Akwasi Amankwaa Afrifa , later Nii Amaa Ollennu .

Ocran was promoted to the rank of brigadier general and later major general after the transfer of power to the civilian government in 1969 .

Ocran chaired the Ghanaian Veterans Association of Ghana (VAG). He retired from active service with the rank of lieutenant general .

Others

Ocran belongs to the Fante people . In 2006, President Kufuor honored him for his services to Ghana. Ocran was awarded the Order of the Star of Ghana , the highest civil order in Ghana.
