Alberto Carlos Rivera Díaz (born November 15, 1979 in Barcelona ) is a Spanish lawyer and a former politician of the liberal Ciudadanos party . Since 2006 he has been chairman of the Ciudadanos. From 2006 to 2015 he was a member of the Catalan Parliament. Since January 6, 2016, he has been a member of the Spanish Parliament .

After the poor performance of the Ciudadanos in the November 2019 parliamentary elections, he resigned from the party chairmanship and his mandate and announced his retirement from politics.

Political career

Rivera's parents ran an electric shop in district of Barcelona, Barceloneta . As a student, Rivera did competitive sports: at the age of 16 he was the Spanish youth champion in breaststroke . After completing his law degree in Barcelona, he founded the Ciudadanos party with several professors; as he had recently won a rhetoric competition, he was also elected chairman at the age of 27. He had himself photographed naked for an election poster, the text read: "We don't care where you were born. What language you speak. What clothes you wear. We are only interested in you!"

According to several sources, Rivera was already a member of the Catalan Partido Popular from 2002 to 2006 . When the unionist party Ciudadanos was founded in 2006, he was elected party leader. Under his leadership, the party succeeded in entering the Catalan parliament in the Catalan parliamentary elections in the same year . In 2010 and 2012 the party was able to repeat this success with profits. Since 2014, the party has also managed to obtain mandates at the national level. In the 2014 European elections , the Ciudadanos sent two members to the EU Parliament. In the general election in Catalonia in 2015 , the party managed to come second with 17.8 percent. Rivera himself no longer ran for this election. Instead, he was the top candidate of the Ciudadanos for the general election in Spain in 2015 , in which the party achieved 14 percent of the vote. Rivera himself was now one of the most popular politicians in Spain.

In the elections in 2016 , April 2019 and November 2019 , he was re-elected as the top candidate of his party in parliament, but due to the poor election result on November 11, 2019, he waived his mandate and announced his retirement from politics.
